POPULATION

  • The United States is the only developing country with fast population growth - about 3 million per year.
  • The most recent U.S. Census Bureau estimate anticipates a 49% population increase - to 419 million by 2050.
  • The United States produces 25% of all greenhouse gases.
  • Greenhouse gasses are produced by industry, farming, and many other human activities.
  • Reducing greenhouses gases was supposed to have cut U.S. emissions by now, however output has soared.
  • The environmental implications are such that each additional US citizen requires one acre just for new highways and other infrastructure.
  • World population could reach nearly 10 billion by the year 2050.
  • World population is growing by 75 million per year. It's projected to almost double, from 6.3 billion to about 10 billion, before it stabilizes. Almost all of the rapid growth will occur in developing countries.
  • Population growth is so constant that it's not news. (whyfiles.org)

AUTOMOBILE

  • CO2 emissions from U.S. cars & trucks totaled 314 million metric tons in 2002. That's as much as would be released from burning all the coal in a train 50,000 miles long -- enough to circle around the world, twice. (Environmental Defense, Nov-Dec 2006, p. 8)
  • It is estimated that by the year 2020, and possibly sooner, there will be one billion cars and light trucks on the road around the world. That's one for every 6 1/2 people on the planet — and over 25% more vehicles than we have today. (Joseph B. White / Wall Street Journal 17 Apr 2006)

RESIDENTIAL / COMMERCIAL

  • The household sector accounts for 15 to 25% of primary energy use in developed countries and a higher share in developing countries.
  • Average per capita household energy use in developed countries is about nine times higher than in developing countries.
  • Per capita household electricity use has grown faster than per capita income. (Trends in Consumption and Production: Household Energy Consumption Prepared by Oleg Dzioubinski Ralph Chipman April 1999)
  • Nearly half (42%) of IT departments have no plans to launch projects in the next 12 months to reduce energy consumption or carbon emissions - according to a 2008 Computer World survey.
  • Plenty of CEOs and CIOs do agree that IT will play a very important role in their efforts to reduce environmental impact. (computerworld.com)
